Before the plumber arrives
- 1
Stop water use
Turn off the washer and dishwasher first.
- 2
Cold morning?
If temperatures dropped hard overnight and drains stopped, a frozen line is likely.
- 3
Crawlspace home?
Older Sparks homes often have drain lines under the floor; listen for dripping.
- 4
Find the cleanout
Newer homes have it near the front walk or garage.
A railroad town
Sparks was created when the Southern Pacific moved its rail yards east from Reno in 1904, and the company helped build homes for its workers. The old neighborhoods around Victorian Square and B Street still have many of those homes, small bungalows and cottages on crawlspaces. Their clay and cast iron laterals are about a century old, and big trees planted along the streets have rooted into the joints.
Victorian Square
Victorian Square, Sparks' downtown, hosts the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off every Labor Day weekend, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors. Restaurants and casinos along the square and Victorian Avenue put a lot of grease into the sewers. Pumping interceptors before the big events keeps them open.
Midcentury Sparks
From the 1950s through the 1970s, Sparks grew with ranch homes south of I-80 and along Prater Way and Oddie Boulevard. Cast iron under slabs and in crawlspaces, and clay laterals, are now aging. Scale and roots are the most common findings.
Spanish Springs and the north
Since the 1990s, Sparks has spread north into Spanish Springs, Wingfield Springs and Kiley Ranch, with thousands of newer homes. PVC drains there resist roots, and calls are mostly about grease, wipes and kids' bathrooms, plus frozen garage drains in winter.
A typical Sparks call
On a January morning after a night in the single digits, a family in a 1955 ranch near Prater Way finds the kitchen and laundry drains won't drain. The plumber finds the laundry line frozen where it runs along the garage wall and thaws it, then clears some scale from the kitchen line. They insulate the garage pipe and add a small heater.
Winter freezes
Sparks sits at high desert elevation, and winter nights are cold. Drains in attached garages, crawlspaces and exterior walls freeze first. Close crawlspace vents, insulate exposed pipe and leave a faucet dripping on the coldest nights. Never use an open flame to thaw a pipe.
The Truckee River
The Truckee River runs along Sparks' southern edge, and the 1997 flood inundated the industrial area and some neighborhoods. Low ground near the river has higher groundwater in spring, and cracked laterals take in water.
Crawlspaces
Older Sparks homes often sit on crawlspaces, with drain lines running under the floor. Those lines can freeze, leak or sag. A sewer smell or cold air under the floor is a sign to check them.
Family households
Sparks has many young families, especially in the northern subdivisions. Busy kitchens and kids' bathrooms produce most of the clogs: grease, food scraps, wipes and toys. A grease can and a no-wipes rule help.
Hard water
Truckee Meadows water is moderately hard, and scale builds up in drains over the years, especially kitchen and laundry lines. Jetting removes scale and grease together.
Dry summers and roots
Sparks summers are hot and dry, and irrigated trees in older neighborhoods send roots far looking for water. A cracked clay joint is an easy target. Root cutting in spring can prevent midsummer backups.
Cottonwoods and poplars near the river are especially aggressive, and their roots can travel much farther than the tree's height.
Industrial area and warehouses
Sparks has a large industrial and warehouse district south of I-80, along with the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center to the east. Many workers live in Sparks, and shift schedules mean water use at all hours. Older homes near the industrial area tend to have the oldest lines in the city.
Pyramid Way and the hillside homes
As Sparks pushed north along Pyramid Way, many neighborhoods climbed the foothills toward the Pah Rah Range. Homes on those slopes sit above or below the street, and their laterals can run steeply downhill or rely on a long, shallow run across the lot. Rocky, decomposed granite soil makes digging slow. When a newer hillside home has repeated clogs, a camera often shows a belly where backfill settled after construction, and jetting or a spot repair usually fixes it.
Some homes on the highest lots also have sewage ejector or grinder pumps. Knowing where the alarm panel is, and keeping wipes out of the toilets, keeps those pumps working through the winter.
Before you call
Note your neighborhood, the home's age and whether it's on a crawlspace or slab. Mention whether it's been freezing, which drains are affected and whether big trees grow near the line.
